THE HAMMOND MARINA SAIL-A-WAY COMMUNITY PROGRAM includes classroom and on-water instruction for the whole community.  While we want to serve all people, participation in the instructional program requires:

  • A desire to attain sailing skills

  • An ability to float calmly in the water for five minutes, while wearing a personal flotation device (PFD).

12 hours of instruction (six 2-hour lessons) plus books and materials are included for both adults and children ages ten through sixteen years. 

Lesson times can be reserved in advance and scheduled to your convenience.  One-to-two instructor/student ratio is emphasized.  Participants are eligible for U.S. Sailing Certification upon completion of course.  Please call the office - 219-659-7678 for additional information.

Sail-A- Way lessons begin mid June.  Six 2-hour sessions

Adults          $175.00

Children under 10 through 16 years old         $75.00

FYI  - HAMMOND MARINA YOUTH SAILING EVENT

 

For three weekends in the Summer,  the Hammond Marina and the Illiana Yacht Club will hold youth sailing at Wolf Lake Memorial Park.  The event will be scheduled for three Saturday's, June 19th, 26th and July 10th at the 122nd and Calumet Avenue beach location.  The sailing will start at 10:00 a.m. and run until 2:00 p.m.

 

The program is open to all youth between the ages of 10 and 16 years old, interested in learning to sail a small, single sailboat.. The program uses a Vanguard pram single sail boat which supports two small children or a single youth.

 

All participants must be accompanied by an adult or guardian 18 years old or older.  The cost for the 2-hour lesson (1/2 hour of instruction and 1 1/2 hours of sailing) is $15.00.  Instructors and safety equipment is included.

DIRECTIONS TO HAMMOND PORT AUTHORITY OFFICE

From Chicago - take Dan Ryan Expressway (I-94) south to the Indiana Toll road (Chicago Skyway I-90) south.  Stay in the local lanes, because the exit is a 63rd St.  Take the skyway approximately 8 miles to the Indianapolis/106th Street exit.  Exit and go straight ahead about 1/2 mile to the "Horseshoe Casino" entrance ramp, turn right.  As you descend the ramp, the marina entrance will be on your right.

 

From Western Suburbs - Take I-80 east toward Indiana.  Just past the Illinois/Indiana border is the Calumet Avenue exit.  Take Calumet Avenue North.  Go approximately eight miles to Indianapolis Blvd.  turn left and go approximately 1/2 mile to the "Horseshoe Casino" entrance ramp, turn left.  As you descent the ramp, the marina entrance will be on your right.

 

From the East - Take I-90 west to Calumet Avenue.  Go north on Calumet Avenue approximately 4 miles to Indianapolis Blvd.  turn left and go approximately 1/2 mile to the "Horseshoe Casino" entrance ramp, turn left.  As you descent the ramp, the marina entrance will be on your right.
